The area designated as Gunnison Rural is vast, extending north to Almont, up the Ohio Creek Valley to Ohio Pass and south to the Hinsdale County line. To the east it spans to the Quartz Creek Valley and beyond to White Pine at the base of Monarch Pass. To the west it stretches beyond Blue Mesa Reservior all the way to Montrose County.
Blue Mesa Reservoir of the Curicanti National Recreation Area is the largest body of water in the state of Colorado, fed by the Gunnison River and spilling into the dramatic Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to the west. Boating, SUP boarding, fishing and ice skating are all popular pastimes at this incredible landmark.
Hartman Rocks Recreation Area sits just southwest of downtown Gunnison, offering hundreds of miles of singletrack trails and rock climbing on Bureau of Land Management Land.
