The City of Gunnison is Gunnison County's largest city and is also the county seat. It sits at the intersection of Highway 50 going east and west, and Highway 135 heading north toward Crested Butte. Gunnison is home to Western State Colorado University which recently transitioned into an accredited 4-year university. The City of Gunnison has just under 6,000 year-round residents. Like many small towns in Colorado, Gunnison's history includes a thriving fur trapping trade in the early 1800s, morphing into a mining town around 1850. Gunnison then became primarily a ranching community around 1880 and maintains a western ranching culture today. Gunnison hosts Cattlemen’s Days, a 10-day rodeo and stock show event that's still running strong after its humble beginnings in 1900.
City of Gunnison homes are mainly traditional style. Most of the homes are moderately-sized and many were built over 50 years ago.
